Analyzing Tarot Cards: The Fool

4–7 minutes
The Fool Overview

The Fool is number zero, making it the first card in the tarot deck. This card sets the tone for the rest of the cards. It’s also important to note that it’s a Major Arcana Card.

Holding a flower and standing under the hot, dazzling sun, The Fool sets out on his adventure. He carries with him a packed bag for his journey ahead, smelling flowers as he goes onward. With flowing sleeves and a feather in his cap, he seems enthusiastic and at ease. Yet, he doesn’t seem to be paying attention to the possible dangers within the surrounding terrain. And what is his little dog trying to say?

When interpreting tarot cards, it’s essential to take a look at several features. The first is most obviously the symbols contained within the cards. Many things qualify as being symbolic, while everything in tarot cards have some symbolic meaning.

Tarot symbols include the colors, number of the card, and scenery. The character of the card is a focal point, including the gender role, facial expressions, appearance, and body language. The climate, weather, and elements also play a role. Lastly, symbols can be animals, tools, and any other objects.

Not only is this the very first card in the tarot deck, but it’s also numbered zero. Symbolically, zero often points to coming full circle. It means that something has ended so that another thing can begin.

On a number line, zero is placed between the negative and positive integers, representing the middle or meeting point. It is a fulcrum that helps to distribute weight, or a reference point between two values. In short, zero is the quantity of nothing.

Being the quantity of nothing, zero has seemingly endless potential. It may go in whichever direction The Fool chooses. The experience can be either positive or negative, but it is most likely going to contain elements of both.

With the sun high in the sky behind The Fool, it appears that the background is yellow. He also has yellow hair. Not to mention, he wears yellow shoes and tights. Lastly, there are yellow shapes upon his tunic.

The symbolic meaning for the color yellow involves enthusiasm, joy, and energy. This is heavily linked to our perspective of the sun, as it gives us life, warmth, and vitality. Likewise, everything seems to be more cheerful on a sunny day.

Conversely, yellow may also represent caution and hazard. This can be seen by many road signs we’re familiar with. This may be due to a need to pay closer attention to something, or a need to metaphorically shine a light on something.

Not looking where he’s walking, The Fool doesn’t seem to have any awareness that he’s stepping right onto the edge of a cliff. It doesn’t seem that there is anything below it aside from water. It also appears to be quite a distance down.

Perhaps he is distracted by the sunshine of the day to anticipate something going wrong. He could be too focused on the scent of flowers, romanticizing his exploration. Even though his backpack suggests he tried to prepare, maybe he lacks the knowledge to avoid crisis.

His little, white dog seems to be barking up at him, attempting to get his attention. Symbolically, white is the color of innocence or purity, while dogs are well-known for their loyalty. Therefore, the dog’s intentions are good.

The Fool represents that something new is underway. Having potential, it is a beginning. Like flowers, it is fresh and like the sun, it appears bright. There are so many possibilities on the road ahead!

With naivety and a lack of experience, The Fool has no idea what to expect from the future. Regardless, he is excited to be headed that way. Embracing the vast expanse of what’s to come, he is daring and free.

Keywords: Adventure, beginnings, newness, potential, and freedom.

To draw upon The Fool in a tarot reading is suggestive of an adventure emerging. There is now room for excitement and exploration in your life. In a sense, you’re shedding your old skin.

You have liberated yourself from something that has been holding you back. Things have recently changed in your life. Now, there’s an opportunity to turn it into whatever you wish.

Perhaps you just experienced some type of ending and are now ready to move on. Maybe you’re tired of feeling stagnant or have been wishing for something to make you feel alive again. This is it!

It’s now time to embrace change. Ahead of you is a chance to form your identity into the person you desire being. Look up and let the sun shine upon you and feel the childlike wonder that still exists somewhere within you.

The life you live is a reflection of the choices you make.

Keywords: Naivety, ill-prepared, caution, and impulsivity.

To draw upon The Fool card in the reversed position in a reading suggests caution. There could be danger in your recent decision-making. If not, perhaps you’re acting out of character due to a lack of experience in some situation.

It’s likely that something has provoked you to act without thinking about what you’re doing. You may lack the clarity right now to make such bold moves. Have you gotten ahead of yourself?

Now may not be the best time to react without consideration, as it’s not in your best interest. Consider the reasons why you’re putting yourself into such an experience. What are you trying to gain from it?

Remember that the life you live is simply a reflection of the choices you make. If it’s undesirable, perhaps you’re not living up to your full potential right now. No matter what, just remain cautious.

Conversely, you could be afraid to move forward. There may be fear that making any choices will get you into situations you don’t like. Regardless, life is full of change, and it will transform at some point whether you want it to or not. Embrace it! With a shift of your perception, you can still turn it all around in your favor.
