Air Overview
Air is all around us, enveloping our bodies in its invisible embrace. It is every breath we take of life and the oxygen that fills our lungs. It’s one of the four elements needed to sustain life here on earth, but it’s the only one we can’t see.
A soft breeze on a beach or a harsh wind during a strong storm, air is both welcomed and feared. Having links to symbolism and astrology, there is much more to air than many may realize. In this post, we’re going to inhale some insight into air.
Symbolism of Air
It’s obvious that we use our nose and mouth to breathe and speak, which is why air is symbolically linked to communication. It enjoys the use of verbal language, including telling jokes and laughing. On the downside it may also be prone to gossip, lying, and manipulative tactics through speech.
Another symbol of air is the process of thinking. Just as air goes unseen, so do our thoughts. We may recognize them somewhere within us, but we can’t hold them or see them because they’re not tangible, nor can we see anyone else’s.
Yet, air is about logic, the rational mind, and our perception. It represents intelligence, our ability to learn and comprehend information, and the amount of mental energy we possess. Because air is known to move with speed, it may also indicate anxiety and nervousness.
The Elements in Astrology
In astrology, the four elements are used as one of the ways that the signs can be grouped together. There are three water signs, three air signs, three earth signs, and three fire signs. Each category displays different characteristics within their personalities. In this post, however, we’re going to solely focus on the air signs.
Air in Astrology
The elements are an important astrology feature. All the same qualities and characteristics described in the symbolism of air also applies to the astrological understanding of air. This means that, in astrology, air represents our ability to communicate, socialize, think, and learn.
Someone who is dominant air within their astrological chart is likely intellectual, with a vast array of knowledge. They’re quick learners, comical, rational, indecisive, and have a habit of overthinking. They are unusually charming, witty, clever, and strategic. Of course, these personality traits are most obvious within the air signs, which we’ll discuss below.
Each of the twelve zodiac signs are ruled by an element. However, only three out of those twelve are connected to the air element. These signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.
Naturally, being ruled by the air element, these three signs are known for the traits distributed by air. Out of all the elements, these signs are the most social. They highly enjoy conversation, intellectual pursuits, and group activity.
Air Sign Characteristics
An air sign, or someone who has a lot of air in their chart, will usually rationalize their emotions. This is the reason that passivity happens among air signs, while it may occur as passive-aggressive behavior. While it is great to be considerate of others people’s feelings, we must also feel our own feelings and allow them room for expression. Otherwise, instead of feeling them, we only think about them. This can cause a buildup of unsaid words left inside of us.
Conversely, air signs don’t typically display emotional outbursts, making them quite easy to get along with. Yet, it’s somewhat difficult to truly know the inner workings of their heart and mind. Even if they say a lot, they may not be forward in speaking harsh truths. If they do, they’ll most likely make a joke of it.
Another notable trait of air signs is their amount of energy. Although much of it stems from nervousness, they are sometimes hard for others to keep up with. Even if they lack focus, they can also become hyperfixated on what interests them.
