The Symbolism of Water and Water Signs in Astrology

Our planet, Earth, is made up of about 75% water. Interestingly, so is the human body! Water is one of the four elements needed for our survival.

Water can be calm, smooth, soft, and inviting like a day on the lake. Sometimes, however, water can be over-bearing, similar to crashing waves and hurricanes. Furthermore, water can also be a small stream that soothes or a tsunami that kills.

It’s the mist of a waterfall on a hot day, the shower that cleanses us after a hard day’s work, and it’s the bottle we turn to quench our thirst. Not to mention, it’s the tears we cry and the sweat we seep. Without water, we’d have no life! In this post, we’re going to analyze one of the four elements, water, through the scope of symbolism and astrology.

“What you water grows,” they say. Wherever tears fall, you feel and where there is depth, there is water. Water can be all consuming and dangerous, or it can be amazingly refreshing.

Having the ability to take on any form or shape, water can be anything. It can freeze and turn to ice or snow. We can boil it until it bubbles, almost like liquid fire. Then, it becomes a gas when it steams and eventually evaporates.

Water is a feminine element, which opposes masculine fire. Where fire is action-oriented, water feels and senses. It represents our chaotic and uncontrollable emotions similar to a heavy downpour or a new mother gently licking her kittens to cleanse them.

Symbolic of feelings, intuition, and depth, water is not easily tamed. Human emotions have a way of sweeping us off of our feet and making us do illogical things. Yet, we must have it.

In astrology, the four elements are used as one of the ways that the signs can be grouped together. There are three water signs, three air signs, three earth signs, and three fire signs. Each category displays different characteristics within their personalities. In this post, however, we’re going to solely focus on the water signs.

Water signs are emotionally intelligent, intuitive, and empathetic. This means that among all the other elements, they’re the best at sensing the moods and energy of other people and their environment. These signs are the most emotionally developed and generally prioritize feelings over thoughts.

The three water signs are:

Someone who is ruled by water in their natal astrology chart is usually sensitive, intuitive, deep, dreamy, emotionally intelligent, empathetic, caring, understanding, accepting, inclusive, compassionate, comforting, loving, gentle, creative, etc.

Those ruled by water can also be smothering, moody, overly-emotional, easily offended, emotionally intense, non-discriminating, inconsistent, fearful, melancholy, co-dependent, manipulative, demanding, etc.

The trademark of any water sign is empathy. Water signs sometimes find it difficult to not be swallowed up by what they feel, which is a great amount! Not only do they feel their own emotions intensely, but they often feel everyone else’s as well. Therefore, it’s sometimes challenging for them to determine whether they’re feeling their own or other’s. Oftentimes, the answer is both.

Conversely, water signs are able to penetrate the unconscious contents deeply embedded within other’s psyches, which are typically unknown to the natives themselves. With that, they’re able to mend emotional wounds by their openness to understanding the person. They regularly do this through sharing experiences and channeling how those experiences impacted that person.

Having an accepting and welcoming nature, water signs can make other people feel heard and truly understood, pulling people up from low places and treating them like family members. While the majority of the world finds it difficult to level with water signs because of their intensity, they’re often able to look past it and care for those they love. It is the water signs that care for their family members and treat their friends like family too.
