For me, Numerology was my first, serendipitous experience with divination. I had coincidentally stumbled across it by doodling the dates of my children’s birthdays. I found it odd that the digits had equalled eleven for both of them. Turned out, my birthday was an eleven too!
Afterward, I was opened up to this strange, new world of numbers. It didn’t take long before I fell in love with this avenue I had never travelled before. I’d discovered that even letters could apparently be transferred into numbers too. Today, that is precisely what I want to share with you.
Overview of Numerology
In physics, we understand that everything has a vibration, while a numerologist believes that all numbers have a unique vibration. Although there are (ironically) countless numbers in mathematics, in numerology there only exists the numbers one through nine. The reason for this is due to simplification.
When we simplify, the goal is to find the smallest possible number, which is a single digit. If you take the number 3,069, for example, and simplify it, your result is 9.
3 + 6 + 9
3 + 6 = 9
9 + 9 = 18
1 + 8 = 9
Tips for Calculating
When simplifying, we can remove any zeroes within a number. When a zero is alone, it has no value in simplification. Therefore, it will not change the result whether it’s there or not.
So, on our top row, we have the numbers 3, 6, and 9. The easiest thing to do is to first add together the 3 and 6 to get another 9. Then, we can add those two 9s together, which results in 18. Lastly, when we simplify the 1 and the 8 in 18, we get our final result. Therefore, 3,069 in Numerology is 9.
There are only two other numbers that are often recognized in Numerology, which are referred to as “Master” numbers. Those two numbers are eleven and twenty-two. You may want to check out the blog post regarding them here.
Numerology Charting
Like astrology, we can create an entire chart for an individual, unique to each person in numerology. We do this by using personal information, such as the birthday and name given to each person at the time of their birth. Different pieces of info deliver separate aspects of a numerology chart.
The Life Path Number, Birthday Number, Expression Number, Soul Urge Number, and Personality Number are some of the most essential elements on a numerology chart. Astrology places the most importance on the Sun Sign, Moon Sign, and Rising Sign, calling these placements the “big three.” Similarly, the Life Path Number is sort of a Sun Sign, the Birthday Number is like the Moon Sign, and the Expression Number can be compared to the Rising Sign.
The Expression Number
While it is straight-forward to figure out an individual’s Life Path Number and Birthday Number, the Expression Number is a bit more complex. This is because it involves the use of letters. Even though it may sound impossible, remember that I said that a Numerologist believes that all numbers have a unique vibration, whereas physics explains to us that all things vibrate. Therefore, all things can be translated into numbers.
Again, Numerology only recognizes the numbers one through nine, eleven, and twenty-two. We can use this chart below to translate each letter into a number. For example, the letters A, J, and S have a value of one and the letters D, M, and V, for example, have a value of four.
Finding Your Expression Number
To figure out your expression number, the first thing you’ll need is the name you were given at the time of your birth. For example, let’s say we’re making a chart for Jane Elizabeth Doe. To find her expression number, we need to find the value of each number in her name by using the conversion table above.
We can do this by checking for the value of each individual letter. For example, the letter J has an equal value of one, while the letter N has a value of 5. We will continue to do this with every letter of the entire name, as we’ve done below.
Jane = 1155
J(1), a(1), n(5), e(5)
Elizabeth = 539812528
Doe = 465
Then, we’ll simplify each name, one by one by adding up the numbers for all of the letters found within a single name.
Jane: 1155
1 + 1 + 5 + 5 = 12
(Simplify 12)
1 + 2 = 3
Jane = 3
Elizabeth: 539812528
5 + 3 + 9 +8 + 1 + 2 + 5 + 2 + 8 = 43

4 + 3 = 7
Elizabeth = 7
Doe: 465
4 + 6 + 5 = 15
(Simplify 15)
1 + 5 = 6
Doe = 6
Finally, we add the three numbers we figured up from each of her names and find their total value, as shown below.
Jane = 3
Elizabeth = 7
Doe = 6
Jane Elizabeth Doe: 3 6 7
Add them together: 3 + 6 + 7
Lastly, we simplify the total we got from each name.
3 + 6 + 7 = 16

1 + 6 = 7
Jane Elizabeth Doe = 7
The Importance of the Expression Number
So, now we know that Jane’s Expression Number is seven, but what even is an expression number anyway? Why does it have any relevancy to a numerology chart? What does it mean?
Well, as mentioned earlier, the Expression Number is much like the Rising Sign in astrology. The Rising Sign depicts our appearance, how we come off the others, and how we’re initially perceived. It’s the part of the astrology chart that gives us an idea of how other people may view us.
Likewise, the Expression Number tells us how we seem. It reveals the outward most part of us. It’s the number in the chart that suggests that we may express ourselves in a particular way, depending on which number an individual has for that element of the chart.
Strengths and weaknesses, persona, and how we interact with the world are a few of the things that can be determined from the Expression Number. It may propose that we present ourselves as friendly or shy, serious or lighthearted. Similarly, this is the area that gives us an idea of whether we come off as extroverted or introverted.
Keep in mind that the expression number, like the Rising Sign, doesn’t give us much insight into one’s internal world. It’s not exactly the area that we go to find out about our deep, inner selves. It may, however, allow us to examine the person that we represent to the world. This number tells us who we introduce ourselves as and what kind of characteristics we might have.
The Meanings of Each Expression Number

ONE
If you have a one as your expression number, you’re someone who people trust to lead. The outside world sees you as someone confident, strong, and capable. You seem to know what you’re doing, even if you don’t. Having no problem initiating things, you’re someone who is bold and proud. Others believe you’re brave and that you possess a great amount of willpower.
TWO
With a two expression number, you may be someone that prefers a quiet environment and a calm atmosphere. Perhaps you spend a lot of time alone, and you could be an introvert. Intuitive, you pick up on things about people easily. You’re perceptive and you probably work better alone. People may think that you’re shy, polite, and mild-mannered.
THREE
As a three, the most obvious quality that people notice about you is that you’re highly creative. You’re a born artist, through and through! However, you’re also a social butterfly that enjoys meeting various types of people. People quickly notice how friendly you are and how easily you communicate. You get inspired by conversing with others, helping to stimulate your creative juices.
FOUR
If you’re a four, you’re someone who is incredibly organized. You could be a minimalist, or you simply have an unmatched attention to detail. People perceive you as someone who is serious and stable. Your sense of humor may be dry and cutting, but you don’t miss a thing. Those in your life appreciate your ability to piece things together when they’re in a mess.
FIVE
Those with a five as their expression number are always on the move. People view you as someone who is nearly always just out of reach. They may feel that they never know where you are and that’s due to your unquenchable thirst for adventure. You love to explore the world around you, and you can never get enough experience to sit feeling stifled and chained down.
SIX
As a six, you’re someone that everyone sees as responsible, with a good head on your shoulders. Your friends and family believe that you have your priorities straight and that you know what’s important in life. You may be somewhat of a homebody and prefer family to friends. Your home is likely comfortable, clean, and inviting, where you love to host others and shine.
SEVEN
To others, you’re intelligent, intellectual, and perhaps too knowledgeable about most topics for others to keep up easily. Yes, you may be a little intimidating to those who aren’t as clever. You can’t help but to analyze everything to understand how it works. As a result, you can figure nearly anything out. People may rely on you to help them, trusting that you’ll solve the puzzle.
EIGHT
People feel that you’re successful in whatever you do, as you’re naturally good at almost everything that you try. It doesn’t seem to take much effort on your part to get the hang of most things pretty quickly. Even if you’re nervous, you somehow make the best of it. Even if you started at the bottom, others admire your ability to rise up from nearly all situations.
NINE
For the nine expression, the people in your life see you as a rebel, while you have a good heart. Perhaps they feel that although your intentions are good, you seem to get mixed up in things that they wish you wouldn’t. Maybe you’re too trusting of others when you shouldn’t be. Regardless, you don’t judge people too harshly and you’re always down to lend a helping hand.
ELEVEN
For the eleven, people likely perceive you as someone who is extremely in-tune to others, seeing you as having something of a psychic ability. You’re super sensitive to energies and others may think it seems like you can read their minds at times. Somehow, you pick up on the most subtle words left unsaid and feelings unspoken. This can make you paranoid if not used carefully.
TWENTY-TWO
People almost immediately notice how easily you seem to be able to receive what you dream. It’s almost like you speak life into your thoughts and pull them from seemingly nothing. You possess a strong ability to create and manifest. You’re a natural builder, motivating and inspiring others by being yourself and doing what you do. Others frequently take notice of your natural flow of magic.
