Before we dive into the Suit of Pentacles within tarot, it’s important that we first understand the two, main parts of the deck. These two parts are what is known as the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Suit of Swords can be found as one of the four suits contained within the Minor Arcana.
The Suit of Wands, Suit of Pentacles, Suit of Swords, and Suit of Cups are what make up the Minor Arcana. As already mentioned in a previous post, the four suits within the Minor Arcana each represent an element. Obviously, these elements are air, water, fire, and earth.
Likewise, each one is symbolically linked to an integral part of every day, human experience. These are thoughts, feelings, actions, and materials. Today, however, we are focusing on the Suit of Pentacles.
Symbolism of the Suit of Pentacles
Representing the earth element, the Suit of Pentacles regard the physical realm. That means that each pentacle card indicates something involving the tangible. Some of these cards are positive, while others feel more negative.
If you’re wondering what exactly a “pentacle” is, it’s actually a talisman in the shape of a pentagram. It generally shows up as a symbol resembling a coin. This is due to its connection to the earth element and the link it has to our material goods.
Likewise, a pentacle strongly suggests money and money is a necessary and valuable tool in which we’re able to exploit to survive and thrive here on earth. Pentacles also symbolize the physical body, our health, our jobs, possessions, land, and anything that can be sensed through sight, taste, sound, scent, and touch. It’s likely not ironic that the five senses line up with the five points of a pentagram.
The Suit of Pentacles and Earth
Earth, in my opinion, is the most beautiful element. With luscious, greenery and a variety of climates, earth is often wondrous. It’s our home and in a unified way, our mother.
Yet, earth will not hesitate to shake off whatever it must at any given moment. Whether sinkholes or landslides, our mother is sometimes a dangerous force not to trifle with. Long before we were ever born and likely long after we die, earth will carry on.
Providing crops to nourish us and the fragrance of flowers for our enjoyment, earth delights our senses. The great mother provides us with resources and tools in which we frequently expend beyond reason. Without her, however, we could never be.
