What Made Me Believe in Astrology

My visit to San Diego, California in 2018; during the peak of my spiritual awakening.

When I was a teenager, I had the guilty pleasure of purchasing magazines targeted at young women. Each one of them had their own version of a monthly horoscope. This is how I learned that my zodiac sign, aka Sun sign, is Capricorn. None of the information written for Capricorn, unfortunately, had ever resonated with me. Naturally, the conclusion I came to, like many others, led me to the notion that astrology held no truth.

During this part of my life, I easily reasoned that occult knowledge was pseudoscience. Trying to convince me otherwise then wasn’t going to be easy. I felt that groups and individuals who believed in esoteric ideas were simply naive, and grasping for idealistic, fantastical straws. Admittedly, all I knew of astrology was that everyone had a zodiac sign. Capricorn was apparently mine.

With disbelief that spelled out a higher-than-thou attitude while reading the monthly horoscopes, I mocked, “Climbing a social ladder for advancement? Cold and distant? Cutthroat and organized? Controlling, demanding, and emotionally unavailable? None of this describes my personality or interests! Astrology is bullsh*t!”

After all, how could planets that are clearly so far away have any sort of impact on me personally anyway? Plus, it was absolutely impossible that every Capricorn currently alive on Earth was having the very same type of month. And they definitely weren’t having the same theme every single month; on and on, at that!

If you’ve had these same types of thoughts, I don’t blame you. This is the handy work of the rational mind, which prefers tangible proof in order to believe in an idea. Unsurprisingly, you are with the majority of people who may seek out evidence to believe and so was I.

About seven years ago, I watched a vlog on YouTube, which had a title that was totally unrelated to astrology. Regardless, I unintentionally learned something about astrology while watching. The video creator used an astrology reference to make a point that they relayed to the video’s topic. They mentioned something they called “a moon sign.” I’d never heard the term before and I didn’t have an inkling of knowledge on it.

This discovery quickly led me to Google-ing the meaning out of mere curiosity. Unexpectedly, I found an entire list comprised of one’s astrological natal chart. It was astonishing to me that it turned out to be highly complex and deep.

The same day, I did some research on things like planetary movements and the influence space objects have on Earth. I wanted reliable information that may answer questions I suddenly had about basic physics. After all, I vaguely remembered anything from my school lessons years prior.

To my amazement, I found that both the human body and our planet Earth are made up of about 70-75% water. It is factual to say that water is crucial for life to exist on planet Earth. Nothing could survive without it. This is because all living creatures on Earth, like humans, are hydrogen-based. In the body, water plays an underappreciated and important role. It helps by regulating body temperature,  transporting nutrients, and removing waste, which is why severe dehydration can be deadly.

Another similarity between the physical body and Earth is its natural ability to interact with other space materials. The moon’s gravitational pull, for example, impacts both the planet we live on and the humans that live on the planet. These are simultaneous micro-macro occurrences. If it isn’t obvious enough, I shall remind you that anything large enough to impact the entirety of the planet we live upon must also impact us as individuals, inevitably.

If a woman becomes pregnant, within the first few weeks of her pregnancy, a pregnancy test is not viable proof of pregnancy until further along. It’s clear that in this beginning state, there are certainly not any visual indications yet either. The new mother may, however, begin to experience morning sickness due to sudden, necessary hormonal changes. This may be the only questionable indicator of pregnancy, but it still doesn’t prove that that is the case. This new life she is carrying inside of her womb can’t yet be physically perceived. It’s unlikely any greater than visually microscopic as cell division begins to take place within her uterus. Regardless of whether she isn’t yet aware yet, she’s no less pregnant than if she were aware.

We likely all know that our Earth’s ocean tides are caused by the gravitational pull of our magnificent Moon! What isn’t as common, however, is to know that the Moon’s gravitational pull doesn’t just impact the ocean alone. It impacts the entire Earth, even the smallest bodies of water. We may not realize this, but Earth is mostly made of large bodies of water, making the moon’s impact easier to spot because it’s a vastly grander scale. In small bodies of water, it isn’t obvious to us because the scale is much smaller. Science can confirm my statements that: if it’s on Earth’s surface, the moon’s gravity has an impact on it.

One area of research focuses on the correlation between the moon’s phases and human sleep patterns. A study published in the journal Current Biology in 2013 found that participants experienced poorer sleep quality during the nights leading up to a full moon, taking longer to fall asleep and experiencing reduced deep sleep. Another study published in the journal Sleep Medicine in 2014 discovered that participants’ sleep duration and quality were negatively affected during the nights occupied by the full moon.

Research has also examined the moon’s potential influence on other aspects of human behavior, such as mood and aggression. While the findings in this area are more inconclusive, some studies have suggested a link between lunar cycles and changes in human behavior. For example, a study published in the journal Psychological Reports in 1985 found an increase in aggressive behavior during full moon periods among a sample of psychiatric patients. Another example is the reports made by those working in institutions including jails, hospitals, and psychiatric wards, who proclaim busier workdays and a sudden rise in criminal activity and accidents during a full moon.

In addition to the moon’s impact on human behavior, there is a fascinating connection between a female’s monthly menstruation cycle and lunar phases. The average length of a menstrual cycle is approximately 28 days, which is remarkably similar to the moon’s lunar cycle of around 29.5 days. This synchrony has led to the belief that the moon’s phases may influence a woman’s menstrual cycle.

Symbolically, the Sun is the Father, while the Moon is the Mother. This makes sense due to the moon’s monthly cycles, which we’ve just learned may have a connection to a woman’s monthly cycle, called menstruation. The most obvious similarity is the amount of time both of them take to complete these cycles, which are about a month to complete for each.

Unsurprisingly, water, which the moon impacts with gravity, is symbolically related to human emotions, feelings, and intuitive insight and wisdom. Serendipitously, the tears we cry are salty water and so is water within the ocean that the moon influences. Although it’s rare for any human to be exempt from the full range of human emotions, the majority of modern society views women as more emotional beings than their male counterparts.

This association of women and emotions may be at the root of the collective unconscious archetype of “the mother.” Meanwhile, the mother is symbolically linked to the moon and the water element. Unfortunately, this is perhaps the reason why society may consider men as weak if they display natural, human emotions. This mindset potentially leads to unhealthy emotional suppression in men. For women, the consequence is often using words that minimize their feelings and limit their comfort in expression. For example, “hormonal” may be used to describe her when she’s reacting with feelings of upset. Similarly, many women have been accused of, “It‘s that time of the month,” eluding the recognition of insults.

The word “luna” comes from Latin, where it translates to “moon.” In the present day, “luna” is still widely used in various languages; including Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Romanian.

Perhaps not so ironically, the word “lunacy,” which refers to the state of acting irrationally or with madness, comes from the historical association between the moon’s phases and the impact it historically had on human behavior.

Next, the word “lunatic” derives from the belief that the moon’s phases affected humanity, which caused them to become wildly unstable; and therefore, unable to act as a functioning member of society.

Lastly, the word “lunar” has the most intriguing meaning, I think. By definition, it means to be determined by the moon or that which is resembling the moon.

With this information, I concluded that there were definitely several phony writers. These fake astrologers had been sabotaging the image of astrology entirely. That had been giving people a poor, false representation of astronomical possibilities and potential. I was dumbfounded when I realized that nearly everything the majority of us thought we knew about astrology had been totally and majorly wrong!

Who was trying to convince society that astrology could depict an entire personality with a single zodiac sign? Logically, no one would believe that, but astoundingly, that had never been the case. Magazines, newspaper articles, and well-marketed websites are filled with useless misinformation. Vague descriptions are written to target literally everyone for the simple intention of profiting, not healing.

As they say, one bad apple spoils the bunch! Unfortunately, false astrologers are still ruining it for the people dedicated to true, in-depth astrology. A real astrologer’s horoscope looks something more like this photo below. Truthfully, if you don’t initially feel sort of overwhelmed with it, it’s probably bullsh*t.

Just as there are many planets in our solar system, they’re also present in our astrology chart. Each one is under a zodiac sign. Not all of them are the same zodiac sign either. For example, you could have your Sun in Cancer, your Moon in Aries, and your Venus in Sagittarius.

There are also houses, points, asteroids, degrees, rulers, aspects, elements, qualities, and tons of other info available today.

One of the most powerful moments in my life was this revelation that you are more than your sun sign. That phrase has become one of the taglines that I frequently use here on this blog! When I didn’t believe in Astrology, it was because my knowledge was limiting. I had only known the twelve signs of the zodiac and truly, no more. Without the acknowledgment of loads more information regarding astrology, it’s no wonder so many people are non-believers! But I have a personal mission to heal this misbelief.

Lastly, I want to remind my readers that time isn’t linear. It’s simply our perception that tricks our minds to think that time is moving linearly to help us grasp the concept of things like aging and death. Considering that traveling through space also means traveling through time, my current view on Astrology is vastly different than before. Now, I believe that studying and tracking planetary movements is more of a study of time itself. As a result, these interpretations can help us to make more sense of ourselves and all that is beyond us.

With all of that, I AM reminded of how small I am. Yet, I AM mighty and powerful, no less.
