Earth Overview
Planet earth is home. It is the place we’re born and the place we die. In some religious, there’s a belief that it is the earth element from which we’ve come, which is why our bodies are buried within the earth once we die. Ultimately, this seems to mean that we are always one with earth.
There is a rich history of symbolism in the earth element. Those symbols link to things like astrology, having connections to a few of the zodiac signs. In this post, we’re going to dig deeply into the symbolism of earth and earth signs in astrology.
Symbolism of Earth
The majority of things contained within our world are made up of the organic materials that are naturally found on earth. Copper, silk, wood, and leather are examples of those materials, just to name a few. This is why one of earth’s symbolic ties is to the material world.
It’s not surprising that even the American dollar is mostly made up of cotton, as it represents tangible goods and their connection to earth. To live upon earth means that earning some type of wealth is necessary to sustain a life of comfort. Yet, the earth element can be addicting as it involves many riches and luxuries that may lead to greed.
Symbolically, earth also echoes the physical plane, including the body and all that is alive. Plants, animals, and humanity are all demonstrations of the earth element. As a result our vitality and health can also be attributed to earth.

Elements in Astrology
In astrology, the four elements are used as one of the ways that the signs can be grouped together. There are three water signs, three air signs, three earth signs, and three fire signs. Each category displays different characteristics within their personalities. In this post, however, we’re going to solely focus on the earth signs.

In astrology, the three earth signs are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. Taurus is a fixed sign ruled by Venus, Virgo is a mutable sign ruled by Mercury, and Capricorn is a cardinal sign ruled by Saturn. Among the three, Taurus has a greater desire for comfort, Virgo is the most serious and meticulous, and Capricorn possesses a great sense of humor, but often prioritizes work before anything else.
Earth signs are seemingly more simple than the other elements as they are known for being grounded, dedicated to their commitments for the long haul, and focused. However, there is a complexity to them that many may not realize, making them more multifaceted than they seem. Although they have a stronger desire to gain materials and wealth, they also have an ability to let go of things they no longer see as valuable. This can include the people in their life as well.
Earth Sign Characteristics
Although earth signs have an immense amount of patience, they have the capacity to unexpectedly erupt like a volcano. Like an earthquake, these disruptions are brief and rare, ending almost as quickly as they begin. Unforgiving by nature, the earth is known to “ghost” the things that stress them out, including what they believe to be unnecessary or intolerable.
Earth simply doesn’t have the energy to be enraged with those who are not being genuine. Like a sinkhole, never previously showing signs of upset, Earth may drop suddenly off the map when their need for privacy is disrupted. They’d rather cave in on themselves all alone rather than allow someone else to get the better of them.
