The 1st House of Self and Ego in Astrology

Overview

In astrology, there is more to learn than solely about the signs and planets. Another key component to an individual’s natal astrology chart are the astrological houses. The houses reveal where we may have certain experiences or when we can expect something to take place. In this post, however, we’re going to dive specifically into the first house!

The First House

The first house is frequently referred to as the “house of the self” or “the house of the ego.” It’s often how we appear without even realizing it. It’s our demeanor, the way we carry ourselves, our body language, how we present ourselves, our most outward human layer, our individual characteristics, and our most noticeable qualities. In this house, we create our self-image and personal identity.

Our solo experiences can be found here, and in the things that we prefer to do completely alone. On the other hand, the first house also represents the earliest part of our life. It can give us insight into our birth and our first days on earth as a brand-new human.

Aries House

The first House is also known as the Arie s House. Essentially, all this means is that the characteristics commonly associated to the zodiac sign, Aries, can also be attributed to the house. However, this is through our experiences rather than within our personality.

As Aries is a bold, courageous go-getter, the circumstances that arise from this house generally involve the same characteristics. Likewise, Aries is sometimes thought of as being egotistical, which is why this is the house of the ego. Furthermore, the first house of Aries is where we put ourselves first.

1st House Location

Naturally, Aries rules the first house. However, for many of us, we have a different sign ruling our personal first house. Therefore, you have a sign ruling your first house while you also may or may not have planets in your first house that influence this placement.

Everything, from the line that AC sits on to the next line below it, is in the first house. Therefore, the symbol for Mars, which is ♂, resides in this house for the current example. So, whenever you’re looking at your personal astrology chart, this is how you determine what’s in your first house.

The Rising Sign

Although the rising sign, also called the ascendant (AC or ASC), and the first house are not the same thing, they are oftentimes lumped together since the majority of people have the same sign for both. The first house and rising sign could easily be remembered as the packaging on a gift. It’s the first thing you get to look at before opening it to see what it really contains within. “Within” being other astrological placements.

Because the first house gives us a basis for our appearance, it is not uncommon for someone with the same rising sign as you to also have similar physical features. To show you what I mean, look below at many female celebrities who have Cancer as their rising sign. Obviously, I’m not a celebrity, but to make a point of how similar the physical appearances generally are, I added my photo in the middle.

All of these women below are Cancer Rising and so am I! Crazy, huh?

Planets in the First House

Now that we understand the differences between the rising sign and the first house, we can add planets to the first house. If you do not have any planets in your first house, that’s okay! This simply means that you turn to the sign ruling your first house for insight.

If you do have planets in your first house, your rising sign becomes more complex. This means that not only will you have similar physical features of those who share your rising sign, but your appearance will also be influenced by whatever planets you have here. Therefore, your rising sign will be a mixture of the sign and planet(s).

Sun in the First House

You’re confident, warm, and honest, while you adore child-like fun. Being highly animated, you may sometimes be a bit immature, but you’re a natural comedian. Although some may lose patience with your need for validation, vanity, flair for drama, and self-absorption, they appreciate your generosity and ability to motivate them. You’re likely a popular person with natural beauty, and you probably have incredibly thick hair and a wide set of shoulders.

Moon in the First House

Sensitive and highly empathetic, your emotions may feel out of your control, and you wear them accidentally on your sleeve. You’re highly emotionally intelligent, picking up the energy of whatever room you walk into. You may be quite a loner, preferring to spend time alone as you deeply battle self-uncertainty and insecurities over your body. Although you have wide hips, your limbs are likely thin, while you may have dark hair, and large, bright eyes.

Mercury in the First House

You’re naturally bubbly, curious, clever, and talkative. You may be able to argue for days, but you’re intelligent and you know it. People see you as someone who is highly energetic and easily in need of stimulation, but you’re also somewhat anxious or jittery. When it comes to your movements, you use a lot of hand gestures whenever you speak. Lastly, you maintain a youthful appearance for a long time.

Venus in the First House

Resourceful, steady moving, and artistic, you don’t mind effort if you gain luxury. You may truly have a love for indulging your senses, loving beautiful things, while you’re a beautiful thing yourself. You’re likely resistant to changes, but you’re also patient, charming, and sensual. Not only that, but you’re quite aesthetically pleasing with highly symmetrical physical features.

Being highly receptive, you could oftentimes lack personal boundaries. This is due to your compassionate nature and your gentle demeanor. However, you could have a need to escape into your own whimsical world and isolate, while you’re likely prone to addictive behaviors. As far as your appearance, you probably have small facial features and a petite body.

You may not realize that whenever you feel something intensely, you project it outward and others feel it too. Even if you’re not trying to keep secrets, people find you highly mysterious.
