Similar to the idea of each zodiac sign being under the rule of an element, they are also influenced by, what we Astrologers call, qualities or modalities. Each of these qualities give the signs, (guess what), different qualities! In this post, we’re going to talk about the three qualities known as cardinal, mutable, and fixed, and see what makes them important to astrology and your zodiac sign.
Elements Versus Qualities
We all likely know that there are four elements, which are fire, water, air, and earth. In astrology, there are three zodiac signs for each of the elements. All signs under a single element share similar traits.
For example, the three fire signs are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, and they’re passionate and fiery. Similarly, each earth sign is grounded and dependable. Air signs are intellectual and talkative, while water signs are emotionally intelligent and intuitive.
| Fire | Earth | Air | Water |
| Aries Leo Sagittarius | Taurus Virgo Capricorn | Gemini Libra Aquarius | Cancer Scorpio Pisces |
Similarities and Differences
With that being said, perhaps you’re wondering what makes the fire signs stand out from one another if they’re all fire signs with similar characteristics. The short answer to this question is that they’re ruled by different qualities. Opposite the numbers of the elements, there are three qualities, with four zodiac signs under each of those qualities.
Therefore, although Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius are fire signs, they do NOT share astrological qualities. Aries is cardinal, Leo is fixed, and Sagittarius is mutable. This is one of the reasons that each of the fire signs are set apart; while it also means they share traits with other signs in which they share the quality.
So, although Aries is a fire sign like Leo and Sagittarius, it is also a Cardinal sign like Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. This means that Aries the fire sign has something in common with Cancer the water sign. Sagittarius, another fire sign, however, has very little in common with Cancer because Sagittarius is mutable fire and Cancer is cardinal water.

The Three Qualities
The three qualities in astrology are cardinal, mutable, and fixed. Each quality has its own unique set of characteristics and traits that influence how individuals express themselves. By understanding these qualities, we are better able to determine how each of these signs have their own unique flair.

The Qualities of the Qualities
Each of the three qualities brings a unique set of traits to the table. You’ll notice in the table at the bottom of this post that each sign’s combination between its element and quality is different, with none having the same two. Seeing them helps us to consider how the individual signs approach life.
Cardinal
The four cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. Each of them represent the beginning of one of the four seasons of the year, which is why they’re known as the initiators of the zodiac. Unafraid to take action, they’re the ones who often get things going.

Natural-born leaders, they typically pave the way forward and are driven to do so due to their high level of ambition. They have an innate ability of seeing the necessary steps they need to take to make goals happen. Proactive and assertive, they may take risks that others won’t, while they can seem somewhat bossy and holier-than-thou.
Being go-getters, the idea of change doesn’t stop them or provoke fear within them. Setting the pace for all involved, they’re determined and powerful. The cardinal signs know that sometimes the risks are necessary because we must lose first in order to finally win.
Fixed
The four fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. Being in the middle of a season, these are the zodiac signs that are known as the pillars of strength. Steadfast and reliable, they provide security and remain stable amongst any chaos. On the contrary, the fixed signs dislike changes that are forced upon them much more than the other signs, meaning they prefer to remain “fixed” in their place.
Fixed zodiac signs are known for their perseverance and consistency. They are great at staying the course and seeing things through to the end, all while remaining humble and loyal. These are the ones who are unwavering in their commitment to their goals, their relationships, and anything else within their lives that they have made commitments to.
Trustworthy and dependable, they’re great at keeping secrets when asked. They may not always be on time, but if they say they’ll be there, they’ll be there. Possessing a great amount of willpower, the fixed signs are not easily swayed by others and are also known for being quite unmovable, stubborn, and inflexible.

Mutable
Lastly, the mutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. Mutable signs are known for their adaptability, flexibility, and versatility. They are the chameleons of the zodiac, able to easily adjust to changing circumstances that help them to go with the flow.

Great at multitasking, problem-solving, and seeing things from different perspectives, mutable signs are jacks of all trades. They are known for their communication skills, intellectual curiosity, and their ability to flow through life’s twists and turns with more ease than the other qualities. Sometimes, however, this can make them seem unreliable, confusing, and difficult to trust.
Having open-minds, they’re accepting of new ideas and circumstances. Being socially explorative, they naturally collect multiple types of resources. The mutable signs are the ones to call when you need connections and someone to help you navigate the journey ahead.
Qualities and Houses
In astrology, the qualities also play a role in the astrological houses, which represent different areas of life.
The cardinal signs are associated with the angular houses, which are the first, fourth, seventh, and tenth. Aries rules the first, Cancer rules the fourth, Libra rules the seventh, and Capricorn rules the tenth. These houses are the most active areas of the chart as they represent the self, the home, relationships, and careers.
The fixed signs are associated with the succedent houses, which are the second, fifth, eighth, and eleventh. Taurus rules the second, Leo rules the fifth, Scorpio rules the eighth, and Aquarius rules the eleventh. Being the houses that are important to our ability to ground ourselves to life, these houses are about finances, children, death, and friendship.
The mutable signs are associated with the cadent houses which are the third, sixth, ninth, and twelfth houses. Gemini rules the third, Virgo rules the sixth, Sagittarius rules the ninth, and Pisces rules the twelfth. Being the lesser obvious amongst the houses, they are more flexible and focused on learning, exploring, communicating, and contemplating.
