Mercury: The Messenger of the Gods
Mercury Overview
The planet Mercury is rich in symbolism and mythology. While it’s also commonly referred to in astrology, Mercury is well-studied in science as well. In this post, we’re going to talk about planet Mercury, including what it means to have it in each of the zodiac signs in a natal astrology chart.
Mercury in Science
Mercury, the smallest planet in our solar system. Due to its thin atmosphere, which cannot retain heat, temperatures on the surface can soar to 430° Celsius (800° Fahrenheit) during the day and plummet to -180° Celsius (-290° Fahrenheit) at night. This harsh environment makes it a challenging location for scientific exploration.
Its surface is heavily cratered, resembling the Moon’s. Meanwhile, scientists believe Mercury has undergone significant volcanic activity in the past. It’s also known for its weak magnetic field, which is about 1% as strong as Earth’s. The planet’s orbit is the shortest of any planet in the solar system, taking only 88 Earth days to complete one lap around the Sun.
Symbolism of Mercury
Mercury, aka Hermes, is known in mythology as “the messenger of the gods”. He moves quickly and has a talent for trickery. Much of this comes from his innate ability to communicate.
The mythology of Hermes lines up with our planet, Mercury. This is due to its size and orbital speed. While the symbol for this planet resembles the one used for the planet Venus (♀), it differs because it also contains something similar to horns on its head as seen in the image.

Mercury in Astrology
Anxious, Clever, Communicative, Logical, & Quick-witted
Mercury and Venus are the only two planets that rule more than a single sign. Although Gemini and Virgo are quite different, Mercury is multi-faceted and strangely flexible. Therefore, the most obvious commonality between both Gemini and Virgo is the planet Mercury itself, including its characteristics.
Called “the messenger of the gods,” Mercury is an incredibly fast-moving planet! This gives it incomparable speed, nervous energy, and quick-wits. Likewise, this messenger is full of information, curiosity, energy, and intellect.
Mercury Retrograde
It’s like that you’ve heard, “Mercury is in retrograde again,” which it frequently is. However, this is where the planet’s trickery comes into play. During a Mercury retrograde, this planet is known to cause problems.
These difficulties that are often experienced during Mercury retrograde usually include issues with technology and machines. Perhaps your car won’t start, your phone keeps dying, a power line is down, or there seems to be a bug in your favorite game. It can also manifest through difficulties with communication and our ability to express ourselves clearly.
