The Moon

We’ve all been stopped in unexpected moments to marvel at the stunning beauty of the moon. She is wonderfully close to planet earth, yet delightfully mysterious. However, many of us rarely pause to consider all of the work she does for our planet or how much she impacts us personally. In this post, we’ll give her the respect she truly deserves!

The Moon in Science

While some planets in our solar system have multiple moons, planet Earth only has one. Of all the space bodies, our moon is the closest. Like a mother to our Earth, Luna is always just outside of the atmosphere.

Moving more quickly than the planets, her orbit time is only about 28 days long considering she orbits Earth rather than the sun. As she does, one of her sides always remains a mystery due to her rotation. Meanwhile, every month, she experiences “phases,” such as a crescent moon, half moon, or a new moon.

Most interestingly, Earth is literally a sort of floating ball in space because of the gravitational pull between both the sun and the moon. However, it’s Luna that influences the gravitational pull of the ocean’s tides and all other water on Earth.

Symbolism of the Moon

Because of the relationship that the moon has with water, the moon and water are symbolically linked. In symbolism, water is related to emotions and intuition. Therefore, so is the moon.

Opposite the sun, the moon is also tied to the mother, motherhood, and feminine energy. Like a human woman, the moon experiences “cycles” of 28 days. For this reason, we can relate the moon to fertility.

Interestingly, the placement of the moon in our astrology chart gives us insight into the part of us that a stranger will never see. In fact, it’s only those closest that ever recognize this part of us as existing. For those who are out of touch with their inner being, they may never acknowledge this part of themselves. After all, it’s not only the place in which we are most comfortably ourselves, but it’s also the area that contains our most private and emotional parts.

The moon is the symbol of the inner self and the unconscious processes. It reflects our deeper needs, desires, feelings, etc. Often being the most sensitive parts of us, the moon in astrology reveals our most authentic nature whenever we emotionally react without much thought.

Furthermore, our moon connects us to our intuition, sensitivities, and the relationship we have to our own depth. This is the placement that tells us about how we prefer to be nurtured. Lastly, it is here that we see an image of our mothers.

The Moon Through the Signs

In a personal astrology chart, the natal placement of the moon is significant. It gives astrologers insight into a person’s inner lives, including their emotional intelligence. Likewise, it tells an important story of their upbringing, showing us how and why someone reacts the way they do and how they deal with their feelings.

To learn about your personal moon sign, scroll down to your sign. If you don’t yet know your moon sign, you can find out what it is here.

Aries Symbol
Moon in Aries

Having an Aries moon, you possess a passionate, inner need to do things on your own. You become offended by criticism, becoming defiant toward those who give you any. You’ll likely not easily listen if someone insists on attempting to teach you something because this makes you feel inferior. If you’re in a place that means you feel you must listen, you could unknowingly begin building resentment.

Your dynamism is your leading personality trait, but you may have a tendency to get frustrated inside rather than to feel sad. This is due to subconsciously holding onto the belief that tears equal weakness, leading you to suppression of emotions. If tears fall anyway, you’ll likely become even more angry with yourself.

To others, your deeper emotions are usually displayed with attitude and the occasional abuse of nearby material objects. Natal moon in Aries can cause some tension through difficulty in genuinely expressing how you feel. As a result, it’s possible that you have a sense that a part of you is trapped inside or that your emotions are blocked somehow. Breathing exercises and meditation could help you balance the energy pent up within.

Taurus Symbol
Moon in Taurus

Being a bull-headed moon sign means you spend the majority of your time creating stability and building immovable foundations. However, as this is the Taurus exaltation, you’re also a pleasure-seeker. This means that if there’s an opportunity to do indulge yourself the way you want to, you’ll quietly take it.

Having a down-to-earth, mellow attitude, you sometimes prefer becoming passive-aggressive over facing difficulties. To ensure your environment remains comfortable and without change, you may give more than you receive to avoid problems. The trouble with this is that you’ll oftentimes withdraw from meeting your own needs.

Your responses are often receptive instead of objective, but this can leave others feeling like they never know what’s going on inside of you. Although you’re a pleasure to be around most of the time, your true thoughts and feelings stay under the surface of your immovable exterior. One reason for this is that you may have an unconscious habit of looking too closely into small details to protect yourself from perceived threats. Unfortunately, this can create a barrier between who you are and who you appear to be, leaving you feeling rather unfulfilled.

Gemini Symbol
Moon in Gemini

With the Moon in Gemini, you may have a deep desire to know as much as you possibly can. Some may even call you an information addict. If a question is asked and no one knows, you’ll probably be the first one searching on Google. It works the same way when it comes to gossip because you likely become excited when others come to you to “spill the tea.”

Instinctively, you are a multi-tasker, constantly moving from one group of people to another, or between tasks, while effortlessly blending in. No matter what direction you’re headed in any given moment, you’re the one who’s actively participating and enjoying the experiences as they come. Unfortunately,

Gemini Moon often has a hard time expressing emotions as they truly feel them, if they allow themselves to feel their emotions at all. Instead, they tend to rationalize everything and unfortunately, this leaves many of their feelings trapped inside of them. This can cause frustration and oftentimes a sense of being hollow or empty inside. This placement sometimes doesn’t realize that this is confusing for others because it leads to frequent projections onto people in their lives, as their overwhelming, mental energy tries to find a way to make sense of reality, provoking them to ground and reflect.

Cancer Symbol
Moon in Cancer

Although having your Moon sign in Cancer can seem difficult to tame, this placement puts the moon in its sign of rulership. While the moon is at home in Cancer, it makes it somewhat unretable to all other moon placements. To others, you can come off as overly-sensitive, but the reality is that you’re completely in tune to your own feelings, unlike most people.

You feel everything with great depth, being carried away with any emotional wave. As a result, you’re heavily guarded to ward against those who lack emotional intelligence, projecting their inner need to know their own depth onto you unconsciously. This often means that you feel misunderstood, shamed, and lacking emotional safety with those you love. Therefore, you tend to prefer isolating rather than integrating, while you have an unmet need for support.

Cancer Moon, you have unmatched intuitive wisdom, which can occasionally become overwhelming. You likely deal with severe anxiety, fearing how others respond to you. It’s even possible that you carry strong emotional burdens, which are usually inherited from your mother, with whom you have the strongest bond to. It is her who you go to when no one else tries to understand you.

Leo Symbol
Moon in Leo

What’s fascinating about this placement is that it desires expressing the exact opposite of that which it is comfortable actually expressing externally. Naturally, the moon rules Cancer, while the sun rules Leo. Therefore, the dynamic and confident nature of sunny Leo is quite inhibited when it placed with the moon, which is the most internalized and private part of us.

Conversely, this also means that whatever you’re feeling will somehow always gain you an audience you didn’t intend on having, as you unintentionally radiate your emotions. While you desire entertaining others with your natural talents for things like doing impressions or fake accents, you dislike negative attention. The more positive side to this is that you have an ability to spread positivity because your vibe is simply infectious.

Lastly, there is something regal about you considering you absolutely demand respect and loyalty. Because you give this to others, you know that you deserve it. This makes you a great friend, a fierce lover, and strong individual.

Virgo Symbol
Moon in Virgo

Hating any spotlight on you and always fleeing from undesired attention, you have no qualms with choosing the sidelines. Within your groups, you’re the supportive therapist who freely gives sage, yet rational advice. You have a strong ability to see things from a logical point of view rather than an emotional one, helping to bring clarity to others.

With the Moon here, you can seem picky and critical, but it’s due to an unconscious desire for perfection. Therefore, you hold yourself and others to high standards, while you often set yourself up for disappointment unknowingly. Whenever your friends and family encourage you to give yourself a break, loving you for what you are, you’re able to be more joyful and lighthearted.

Your arena of comfort is within knowledge and you show love by teaching what you know. If you take an interest in something, you’ll know everything there is to know about it. Whenever you can serve others by sharing information, you feel fulfilled.

Libra Symbol
Moon in Libra

Like Libra Sun, Libra Moon, you rarely go anywhere alone and you have many large groups of friends. You truly feel that you can belong anywhere, and people love having you around. You’re usually well-liked by the majority because you enjoy creating harmony within your environment.

Striving for the best, you can sometimes have an idealistic outlook on things, especially other people. Unfortunately, this can lead to unforeseen let-downs. You’re easily excited thinking of possibilities, but easily hurt when your ideals don’t meet your expectations.

Seeing a world through rose-colored lenses of what can always be improved, you might forget to look at what is already going well. As a result, you could miss out on opportunities that are right in front of you. However, all in all, your intentions are good and there’s nothing inherently wrong with striving for peace or justice.

Scorpio Symbol
Moon in Scorpio

Scorpio Moon, you’re intense and mysterious! It’s mostly due to having a knack for diving into other’s hidden worlds with a mere glance, as if by magic. As a result, people are both intrigued by you and afraid of you, as you easily penetrate the deepest parts of them without much effort.

The relationship you’ve had with your mother has been complex and, let’s face it, you don’t trust others easily because of it. Yet, we could hardly call you paranoid if you’re proving to yourself and others, time and time again, that your assessments are correct. Meanwhile, you have a frightening amount of awareness that can also trigger paranoia in others; but they still find something about you quite alluring.

You’re imaginative, passionate, and ambitious too. However, while you don’t move through life wishing to hurt anyone, you’re also not opposed to going to great lengths to get revenge on those who’ve done you wrong. Not to mention, you don’t give up easily and you can convince yourself of whatever you must to justify your own crimes.

Sagittarius Symbol
Moon in Sagittarius

Inside of you, Sagittarius moon, is the heart of a philosopher, always delving into seriously huge questions about life and existence. This gives you a quirky and interesting quality, making you rather enjoyable to be around. However, you have a need for exploration and a constantly wandering eye, resulting in you always following behind the awe of your inspiration without hesitation.

You take on various projects at all times, but you might lack the focus or dedication to stay around long enough to become a professional. The phrase, “jack of all trades and master of none,” potentially describes a lifelong habit you have. As you attempt to tie up loose ends of one thing, you may grow tired and impatient before it’s ever done, leaving unfinished work.

It’s the excitement of the future that attracts you, Sag. Staying in the present is something you’re good at when it comes to adventures. It may be helpful for you to remember that the grass is green wherever you water it.

Capricorn Symbol
Moon in Capricorn

Being a cardinal sign, Capricorn likes to manage, but not every aspect of life should feel like work. Oftentimes, you might not realize you can come off as lacking emotional depth, as your communication style is remaining vague and reserved. You can appear to be the most confident person in a room, ensuring you gain respect, but it doesn’t mean that you actually are.

Because you doubt the value of your emotions, you’re overly cautious with who you open up to. This can confuse the people in your life, resulting in them also being afraid to fully trust you. Yet, feeling vulnerable is terrifyingly uncomfortable, and you’d rather just be a stone.

Unless you’re busy doing something that allows you to feel a sense of accomplishment, you simply feel you have no worth. Therefore, you unknowingly place immense weight upon your own shoulders, equating duty to success. Not until you’ve at least surpassed your own standards of success will you give in to letting go and being free.

Aquarius Symbol
Moon in Aquarius

It’s truly not as easy for everyone to just do as they please, Aquarius moon, and this is why you’re so unique! The people in your life desire your loyalty and your love, but you are righteous in your movement. As a natural rebel-type of personality, you can seem hard to catch for too long.

Because you would never settle for less than you deserve the possibility of meeting “that “the one” feels far away. However, you’re yearning to find someone that can match your energy. Therefore, you may go through periods of short and shallow relationships on a search, but you’ll surely have more success once you no longer seek. Not to mention, more meaningful relationships will be as open to you as you are to them.

Enjoying investing in interesting ideas you love communicating unfiltered theories with like-minded people. You somehow remain a free and independent mover and shaker in all that you do. A natural freedom fighter, you will always rally for your cause, no matter the consequence.

Pisces Symbol
Moon in Pisces

If your natal Moon sign is Pisces, you’re an emotional sponge within every atmosphere and this can lead you to depression if not handled with care. It’s incredibly important that you’re selective about who you give your time to. Although you’re supportive and gentle to those you care about, you can get easily overwhelmed by negative energy. Therefore, it’s important you take plenty of time to decompress.

Some people may take advantage of your kindness, and vampires can smell the blood. Your etherial quality can have the greedy lusting for your energy, draining you without your conscious awareness. If you’re confused when you converse with them, take this as validation regarding someone in your life.

You simply cannot give more than what you get without burning out. It’s important that you heal the wound of childhood neglect you recieved from your mother as a child, which you may not have previously realized wasn’t normal parental behavior. It has left you with a wounded heart, searching for your own value by unknowingly giving too much of yourself away.
