Overview
The twelve zodiac signs are a fundamental aspect of astrology, each representing distinct personality traits, strengths, and challenges. These signs are divided into four elements, three qualities, and different ruling planets.
Each sign contributes uniquely to the astrological tapestry with each one connected to a different constellation. Therefore, all twelve of them are represented by a symbol in the shape of that constellation, which is also connected to symbolism itself. The zodiac signs offer insight into human behavior and relationships, making them essential for learning about when studying astrology.
Intro to the Twelve Zodiac Signs
To begin, the twelve zodiac signs are often remembered in a particular order with Aries being the first and Pisces being the last. Each one has a symbol used for both astronomical and astrological associations, as seen by the first list, or the list to the left. Likewise, all the signs have a symbolic representation, which resembles their constellation, as seen by the second list or the list to the right.
| Number | Sign | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aries | ♈ |
| 2 | Taurus | ♉ |
| 3 | Gemini | ♊ |
| 4 | Cancer | ♋ |
| 5 | Leo | ♌ |
| 6 | Virgo | ♍ |
| 7 | Libra | ♎ |
| 8 | Scorpio | ♏ |
| 9 | Sagittarius | ♐ |
| 10 | Capricorn | ♑ |
| 11 | Aquarius | ♒ |
| 12 | Pisces | ♓ |
The Representation of Each Sign
Generally, to remember the symbolic interpretation of each zodiac sign, we can categorize them into different groups. Hence, these groups are “Horns,” “Half Breeds,” “Seeing Double,” “Humans,” and “The Threatening.” Moreover, while most of the symbols for the signs are animals, there are a few that are human and only one that is an inanimate object.
The “Horns” group contains three different signs, which are Aries, Taurus, and Capricorn. Aries is the Ram, Taurus is the Bull, and Capricorn is the Sea-Goat. What this essentially means is that these three signs can be temperamental when provoked, giving the horns, with Aries being the most likely to do so as Taurus and Capricorn are much more patient due to their earthy characteristics.
For the second group, “Half-Breeds,” we have Sagittarius and, once again, Capricorn. Sagittarius is known as the Archer, but this isn’t just any archer. The Sagittarius Archer is half horse and half man, while Capricorn is a Sea-Goat being half fish and half goat. This gives these two signs dualistic qualities. Capricorn climbs higher within the material world, but possesses great emotional depth and understanding while remaining grounded. Sagittarius is a human, but is capable of getting much further than most humans do, having the stamina of a horse, having an explorative nature and a sense of adventure.
For this group, we have the zodiac signs that have doubles or two sides to them. These signs are Gemini, Libra, and Pisces. Gemini is known as the Twins, Libra is the Scales, and Pisces is the Two Fish. Each of these signs have a double-sided nature or two sides to their personalities. Gemini is adaptable, Libra is just, and Pisces can act accordingly, depending on the circumstances.
For the Humans, we have Virgo the Virgin, Aquarius the Water-Bearer, and once again, Gemini the Twins and Sagittarius the Archer. Each of these four signs represent common personality types. Sagittarius is extroverted and open, while Virgo is introverted and high-strung. Both Gemini and Aquarius can be either intro or extroverted. While Aquarius has a curious and rebellious nature, Gemini is more reasonable and less controversial.
In the final group, we have signs Cancer, Leo, and Scorpio. The reason that I’ve called these three signs “threatening” is due to their representations being animals that have the ability to injure or kill humans. Cancer is the Crab, Leo is the Lion, and Scorpio is the Scorpion. Obviously, Cancer is the least threatening of the group, but both Scorpions and Crabs can pinch. Scorpions, on the other hand, can also seriously injure by stinging. Lastly, lions are known as the kings of the jungle and are carnivorous predators with unmatched hunting skills and powerful jaws. Therefore, these three signs are reactive, intense, and/or intimidating.
The Elements and the Zodiac
Now, if we divide these twelve zodiac signs into three groups, (with Aries, Taurus, Gemini, and Cancer being the first group), we’ll get three groups that each contain the four elements. For example, Aries is a fire sign, Taurus is an earth sign, Gemini is an Air sign, and Cancer is a water sign. Therefore, these four signs complete the four elements. Certainly, the same applies to the second group as well as the third group.
Each element in astrology represents different characteristics. Fire is passionate and determined, earth is grounded and practical, air is curious and clever, and water is intuitive and compassionate. Each sign that shares an element will have these traits in common within their personalities.
| Sign | Element | Elemental Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | Fire | Passionate, Creative, Ambitious, Determined, Impulsive, and Driven |
| Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Earth | Practical, Grounded, Reserved, Dependable, Steady, and Hard-Working |
| Gemini, Libra, Aquarius | Air | Intelligent, Curious, Social, Perceptive, Analytical, and Thoughtful |
| Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | Water | Compassionate, Sensitive, Empathetic, Emotional, Imaginative, and Intuitive |
The Qualities of the Zodiac
In astrology, the three qualities are Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. What qualities signify is the level of adaptability of the zodiac signs. Cardinal signs are leaders, fixed signs are inflexible, and mutable signs are changeable.
Quite the opposite of the elements and their groups, if we divide the signs up into four groups of three this time, each group will have each of the three qualities. For example, the first group would be Aries, Taurus, and Gemini. The next group would be Cancer, Leo, and Virgo, and so on.
| Sign | Quality | Quality Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn | Cardinal | Leadership, Initiator, Ambitious, Domineering, Assertive, and Proactive |
| Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius | Fixed | Inflexible, Unchangeable, Steadfast, Persevering, Willful, and Unwavering |
| Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces | Mutable | Flexible, Adaptable, Changeable, Versatile, Fluid, and Explorative |
The Ruling Planets of Each Sign
Lastly, each of the zodiac signs are ruled by a planet. What you’ll notice is that a few of the signs are ruled by the same planet, while the rest aren’t.
LEO
Leo the Lion is ruled by the sun! This fixed, fire sign has it’s mind made up. The sun gives us life, heat, and light, and Leo loves to radiate and be seen shining like the star it truly is. As the king of the jungle, Leo is strong and fierce! However, Leo’s greatest quality and strongest strength is it’s massive lion-heart!
CANCER
Cancer is ruled by the Moon, which is the closest space object to planet earth. Not only is the moon close, but it changes signs quickly. Cancer, however, is ruled by the moon all the time. Moody and nurturing, Cancer is symbolic of the crab, which retreats into its shell for protection. Conversely, Cancer is cardinal, giving it leadership qualities along with its emotional depth as a water sign.
GEMINI & VIRGO
Mercury is our smallest planet and other than our moon, it moves the fastest too. The planet Mercury is known for its ability to communicate effectively. It’s also intelligent, quick-witted, and perceptive. Gemini and Virgo both possess many of these characteristics, while they’re both mutable signs, keeping them moving and forever changing. They differ, however, because of their elemental influences.
Gemini is an air sign, giving it the gift for gab considering it’s ruled by Mercury. Virgo is an earth sign, making it more reserved than Gemini. However, Virgo is highly perceptive and extremely detail-oriented! The earth influence gives us a more laid-back attitude than air, which means that Virgo is less outwardly expressive than Gemini.
TAURUS & LIBRA
Venus is the planet of sensuality, romance, and beauty. It’s sometimes referred to as our sister planet since it’s closest to us and similar in size to planet Earth. It rules the two signs Taurus and Libra, which have characteristics that they both gain from planet Venus. However, there are also some differences between these signs.
Taurus is a fixed, earth sign, symbolic of a bull. Although this sign enjoys comfort that it inherits from planet Venus, it’s grounded and stubborn, unlike Libra.
Libra is a cardinal, air sign, symbolic of the scales of justice. Although it enjoys beautiful things, Libra is also an adaptable leader.
ARIES
Aries is the only sign ruled by the planet Mars, making this zodiac sign a true martian. Being a cardinal, fire sign with the horns of the ram, Aries has the guts and passion to intitate and act with passion. The planet Mars, being known as the god of war, bestows Aries with warrior-like qualities and grit.
SAGITTARIUS
Sagittarius is ruled by the planet of luck and expansion, which is Jupiter. Being a mutable, fire sign, Sagittarius is the most adventurous of the zodiac. Considering the symbol of Sagittarius is the archer, this is the sign that aims for goals and points of a map, having the intention to hit a bullseye each time the urgency to explore is an option. Not to wisdom, centaurs, such as Sagittarius, are often said to be imbued with great wisdom!
CAPRICORN
Capricorn is the only planet that is ruled by our planet with rings, Saturn. Saturn is the planet of responsibility, restrictions, time, and limitations. As such, this cardinal, earth sign is highly equipped for climbing the highest mountain, similar to a goat, no matter the challenges that arise along the way, while remaining humble and grounded.
AQUARIUS
Aquarius is ruled by the planet Uranus, which is symbolic of innovation, rebellion, and the future. As a fixed, air sign, Aquarius doesn’t easily change it’s mind, but it is incredibly intelligent! Although it’s an air sign that often relies on its intellect, Aquarius is also the water-bearer, meaning that it doesn’t lack emotional intelligence either. In fact, this sign may be the most balanced between the head and the heart.
PISCES
Pisces is ruled by our planet, Neptune, which is known for imagination, illusions, and the unseen realms. Being a mutable, water sign, Pisces is highly emotionally intelligent, sometimes even thought to be psychic. This is the case considering it’s symbol contains two fish instead of one, giving it a double dose of empathy. However, Pisces is also adaptable and has an innate spiritual understanding.
SCORPIO
Lastly, Scorpio is ruled by the dwarf planet, Pluto. Pluto is often believed to be the planet of darkness due to its connection to sex, death, and transformational experiences. Because Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, this sign is tied to these aspects of life as well. However, Scorpio is a fixed, water sign. This means that it’s frequently inflexible within its emotionality. Since it’s represented by the Scorpion, this sign can seriously sting too and understands the dark parts of human nature better than any other sign.
