Saturn Overview
The planet Saturn is rich in symbolism and mythology. While it’s also commonly referred to in astrology, Saturn is well-studied in science as well. In this post, we’re going to talk about planet Saturn, including what it means to have it in each of the zodiac signs in a natal astrology chart.
Saturn in Science
Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and the final planet in our solar system you can see with the naked eye. With an incredible amount of 53 moons, and the possibility of even more, Saturn has more moons than any other planet in our solar system. Although not quite as large as Jupiter, it would still take about nine earths to make up the size of Saturn.
Like the planet Jupiter, Saturn is also a gas giant. One difference between the two gas giants is that Saturn has seven rings surrounding it. These rings are made up of space debris, such as rock and ice. Neither gas giant can sustain life as we know it because their surfaces are actually not solid!
Symbolism of Saturn
When it comes to symbolism, the name Saturn is derived from Roman mythology’s God of Time and Harvest, Saturn. However, before the planet was called Saturn, the Greeks named it after their mythological god, Kronos (or Cronos). Kronos was also associated with time and harvest, which is why Saturn’s symbol resembles a sickle.
Afraid of his children coming after his reign, he swallowed them at birth to prevent it. However, one of his son’s, Zeus (aka Jupiter), was rescued by his mother. As his son later defeated him, he’s often associated with the inevitable decay of time.

Saturn in Astrology
Focused, Responsible, Restricting, Serious, & Timely
In astrology, the planet Saturn acts as a father, giving us restricting the more enjoyable sides of life. This planet may seemingly obstruct our path in order to teach us responsibility. These lessons ultimately reveal the harsh realities of the laws of time.
Saturn isn’t there to harm us, however. The planet only wishes to help us ground and understand value. Generally, this requires patience, diligence, and hard-work. As they say, “nothing in life comes free.”
Papa Saturn
You can think of Saturn as a parent who disciplines a child. They don’t necessarily desire upsetting their child and making them cry whenever they don’t get their way. To the child, it feels hard and mean, but the parent knows that it’s in the child’s best interest to feel the consequences of whatever the child has done wrong to learn something important about life.
As the child’s parent, they know it’s their duty to perform this action of discipline or restriction to help the child in the future better navigate responsibilities. Until the child has grown up, they don’t often understand how the parent has benefited them by doing this. Astrologically, Saturn is the parent and we are the children.
Saturn Through the Signs
In a person’s astrology chart, their natal Saturn placement can tell them about the restrictive areas within their lives. This is typically where they feel they’re perhaps not getting something others have or have more responsibility there. Likewise, this planetary placement may also reveal where we’re “in it for the long haul.”
