Neptune Overview
The planet Neptune is rich in symbolism and mythology. While it’s also commonly referred to in astrology, Neptune is well-studied in science as well. In this post, we’re going to talk about planet Neptune, including what it means to have it in each of the zodiac signs in a natal astrology chart.
Neptune in Science
Most interestingly, Neptune was the very first planet discovered using mathematics rather than being seen by a telescope! Many people believe that Neptune is made up of water because of its beautiful blue appearance, but this planet is actually made up of the gases methane, ammonia, and helium, giving it its color. Below, the surface is mostly covered in ice. Meanwhile, it has a rocky core underneath the surface.
The days here are only 16 hours long! It takes 165 years, however, for Neptune to make a full rotation around the sun. Astoundingly, this planet comprises fourteen moons. Each one is named after sea gods and sea nymphs, which are references to Greek mythology.
Symbolism of Neptune
The planet, Neptune, acquired its named from Roman mythology. However, before Rome, the Greeks had a similar god whose name was Poseidon. Therefore, ancient Greeks called this planet Poseidon.
The symbol used for the planet is also linked to ancient mythology. If it isn’t already obvious, the symbol for planet Neptune is something well-known around the world. It resembles Neptune’s (aka Poseidon’s) famous trident.

Neptune in Astrology
Aware, Dreamy, Empathetic, Imaginative, & Sensitive
Neptune is the planet of dreams, fantasies, and psychic ability. It is the ruler of the sign of Pisces, known for their vast imagination and their deeply emotional nature. Being the Lord of Dreams, this gives Neptune an ethereal quality, connecting us to mysticism and magic. Oftentimes, this is the planet that takes us on an adventure to other realms.
Likewise, this planet is known for causing confusion and disillusionment. It’s great at blurring the lines between what is real and what isn’t. Isolation, addiction, and martyrdom are some shadow traits of Neptune.
Neptune Through the Signs
In an astrology chart, Neptune can tell us about where we may battle confusion or spend time in daydreams. It might reveal our level of sensitivity or how empathetic we are. Likewise, this is the planet that shows us where we are often disillusioned.
It takes the planet Neptune about 164–168 years to completely orbit all the way around the sun! That means, it’ll stay in each of the twelve signs for about 14 years each. As such, our entire generation will have Neptune within the same zodiac sign.
