Analyzing Tarot Cards: The Magician

The Magician Overview

The Magician is numbered one, but that doesn’t make it the first card in the tarot deck. In fact, this is the second card, following The Fool, which is number zero. It’s also important to note that this is a Major Arcana Card.

Holding a double-sided candle, The Magician stretches his hand up high. Meanwhile, his other hand points down below. He is surrounded by red roses, with an infinity sign hovering over his head. At the table in front of him sits the four symbols from the suits of the Minor Arcana: the pentacle, the cup, the wand, and the sword.

When interpreting tarot cards, it’s essential to take a look at several features. The first is most obviously the symbols contained within the cards. Many things qualify as being symbolic, while everything in tarot cards have some symbolic meaning.

Tarot symbols include the colors, the number of the card, and scenery. The character of the card is a focal point, including the gender role, facial expressions, appearance, and body language. The climate, weather, and elements also play a role. Lastly, symbols can be animals, tools, and any other objects both within the background and the forefront.

As previously mentioned, this is NOT the first card within the tarot deck. It’s the second card, as the first card is number zero. However, The Magician card is numbered one.

The number one represents initiation, leadership, and willpower. It’s the number of unity, confidence, and drive. Like drawing a straight line, one has purpose, giving us focus to achieve a specific goal.

One forges forward, creating its own path. This is the number of the self. Therefore, the seemingly singular digit, one, is actually quite connected to the all.

The color yellow surrounds the Magician. Yet, there is also a strong presence of the colors red and white. Lastly, there is a small amount of green and even less blue.

  • Yellow: The symbolic meaning for the color yellow involves energy, power, and ego. It’s the color of aliveness and the expression of oneself.
  • Red: The color red is rich, like the blood that gives us life. It’s the embodiment of the physical realm.
  • White: This is the color of purity, innocence, and the forces of nature that exist, yet remain unseen in the physical realm.
  • Green: When it comes to the chakras, green is the meeting point between the three above it and the three below it. By itself, green is suggestive of either love or envy.
  • Blue: Lastly, blue represents the ability to speak, express, and give life to thought by communicating.

The Magician shows confidence as he looks forward, making eye-contact with the viewer. His right hand is raised high as he holds a double-sided, white candle within it. His empty left hand is in the opposite position, pointing low.

Red roses represent passion, desire, and power, while these roses could also suggest some connection to Rosicrucianism. Meanwhile, the infinity symbol of The Magician’s head shows his understanding of two worlds. This may mean that he has begun practicing consciously manifesting from the spiritual world and into the physical one.

Upon the table in front of The Magician sits the symbols that make up the Minor Arcana, which is the pentacle, the cup, the sword, and the wand.

  1. Pentacle: Linked to the earth element, as well as the tangible, material world.
  2. Cup: Linked to the water element, as well as emotions, intuition, and feeling.
  3. Sword: Linked to the air element, as well as thoughts and communication.
  4. Wand: Linked to the fire element, as well as passion, action, and desire.

The Magician represents that an initiation is transpiring. Having realized his potential, he’s now sure of himself and ready to tap into his power. He’s begun using all of his resources and skills to manifest that which he desires.

Having an understanding of the balance between the physical and spiritual worlds, as seen by the infinity symbol, The Magician is able to perform something akin to magic. A master of his tools, he’s an alchemist with great willpower.

Keywords: Manifestation, resourcefulness, power, skill, and inspiration.

To draw upon The Magician in a tarot card reading is suggestive of having a desire to tap into your own willpower and manifest your life in a more profound way. Perhaps this is an indication that you’re ready. You’ve acquired the necessary resources and worked toward having the skill set.

You’re being initiated into consciously creating the life you desire living. This may only happen once you understand that it’s up to you to write the story of your life, for better or for worse. The choice is only up to one, and that one is you.

Like magic the magic of a magician, you have the power to give life to your thoughts. As you speak, you animate your experiences, shattering the paradigms of your reality. Therefore, it’s important to wisely choose the words that you say. Although the words of all us all contain the power to create, you can now see this around you in real-time. With that, you have recognized that what happens, you can no longer write off as mere coincidence. To know this arcane truth is truly magical, and you’ll begin to inspire those within your life. Just remember that what you create will come back to you.

Keywords: Manipulation, fraudulence, abuse of power, or lack of knowledge.

To draw upon The Magician in the reversed position may suggest a few different things, depending on the individual.

The first possibility is that you understand the power of The Magician and abuse it, using manipulation to gain out of self-interest. Conversely, you don’t yet understand it enough to consciously manifest. Lastly, you may recognize this power in others, but act fraudulently.

If you lack the necessary knowledge to step into the will of The Magician, it’s likely due to still having doubt in your mind. There may exist paradigms within the deeply embedded contents of your psyche from societal conditioning. When doubt is present, it blocks our ability to consciously create. Therefore, there’s still work to do before unlocking The Magician consciously. On the other hand, if you already understand the power of The Magician, do you abuse it? Do you manifest to greedily manifest? If so, you may infringe upon the law of freewill. This is unwise and will come back to you ten-fold.
